What a retrograde is

A retrograde is a trick of the eye. The planet never truly turns round. It only seems to, from where we stand on Earth. Earth and the other planets move round the Sun at different speeds, and when one overtakes another, the slower one appears to slide backward for a while, the way a slower car on the highway seems to slip behind you as you pass.

Astronomers call it apparent retrograde motion, and it is a real thing you can watch. Note a planet's place against the stars night after night and you will see it slow, stop, loop, and carry on. I have watched Mars do it from the back paddock on a clear evening.

The meaning is plain enough. As the planet seems to turn back, we are asked to turn back too. Whatever that planet looks after comes up for review, and then gets folded back into your life. Call it coincidence or call it a message. Either way, the sky builds a pause into the year, and I have found it a mercy more often than a nuisance.

How a retrograde unfolds

A retrograde does not arrive all at once. It has a before, a middle and an after, and each part feels different.

For about two to three weeks before the retrograde proper, there is a shadow period. Themes the planet rules begin to stir. This is your warning. Note what is surfacing, because it is usually the very thing the retrograde wants you to look at.

Then the planet stations retrograde and appears to move backward for roughly three to eight weeks, depending on the planet. This is the heart of it. Old situations come back up. Delays happen. Nothing is broken. The sky is asking you to slow down and look closer.

After the planet turns direct, there is another shadow of two to three weeks while things settle. The lessons sink in. Whatever you learned stops feeling like friction and starts feeling like sense.

So the whole cycle runs about seven to twelve weeks. It is longer than most people expect, which is why the dates on this page matter.

Why retrogrades get blamed

Mercury retrograde has become a joke everyone is in on, blamed for crashed laptops, lost luggage and broken hearts. I have read charts for over fifty years, and I will tell you plainly: the retrograde did not break what was already cracked. It only lit the crack so you could see it.

Retrogrades are not curses. They are a season of looking back. The problems people hang on them were sitting there already, and the retrograde lifts them up so you can mend them or let them go. That is a kindness, even when it does not feel like one.

I would have you welcome them rather than dread them. A retrograde is the one time the sky gives you permission to stop, think, and let things settle while everyone else rushes ahead.

What each planet's retrograde reviews

Each planet keeps a different corner of life, so each retrograde brings a different kind of looking back.

Mercury retrograde

Mercury looks after communication, travel, technology and contracts. When it turns back, words tangle, journeys run late, machines sulk and papers want a second reading. But old friends write, half-finished jobs get finished, and you learn to think before you speak or sign. That is no small gift.

Venus retrograde

Venus looks after love, beauty, values and money. Her retrograde brings relationship patterns up to the light. A love from before may knock. You may find yourself weighing what you truly value against what you merely wanted. It is a season for deepening what you have, not starting something new.

Mars retrograde

Mars looks after action, drive, anger and courage. When he turns back, your fire goes inward. You may feel less like charging ahead and more like sitting with the question of whether the charge was even wise. Sharpen the plan now. Fight later.

Jupiter retrograde

Jupiter looks after growth, luck, belief and higher learning. His retrograde turns the growth inward. You look again at your goals, your faith, the direction you are expanding in. Less chasing, more wisdom.

Saturn retrograde

Saturn looks after structure, responsibility, work and the lessons life will not let you skip. When he turns back, you review your commitments, your boundaries and the foundations you are building on. Whatever you have been avoiding comes to visit.

The myths, gently set straight

You will hear that you must never sign a contract during Mercury retrograde. If you must sign, sign slowly. Read everything twice, ask the awkward question, and make sure there is a way out. Signing is not the problem. Signing without looking is.

You will hear that retrogrades ruin everything. They show you what is already out of true so you can fix it. That is not ruin.

You will hear that nothing new may begin. Not quite. What thrives in a retrograde is anything that begins with re: revising, reviewing, reconnecting, refining, repairing. What struggles is something brand new that needs a smooth run to catch hold. Give the new thing until the planet turns direct.

And some say retrogrades are just astrology's excuse for bad luck. They are real events in the sky, plain to see. Believe in their pull or do not. They still give you a rhythm of doing and then looking back, and that rhythm is worth keeping.

Working with a retrograde, not against it

The good uses are always the same, whichever planet is involved. Review what is in progress. Reconnect with people you have lost touch with. Finish what you started. Read the fine print. Back things up. Let yourself sit quietly and look inward for once.

What goes badly is rushing. Forcing a yes out of someone who needs time. Signing the big thing on a whim. Pushing through every delay as if it were an insult. A delay in a retrograde is very often a favour wearing a disguise.

And one habit worth keeping: when an old friend turns up, or an old problem, do not slam the door. The sky sends things back around so you can either mend them or finally lay them down. Either way, you come out lighter.

Mark the dates. Put the station days in your diary, the retrograde ones and the direct ones both, so nothing catches you unawares.

Be gentle with the big things. If you can, avoid signing major contracts, launching something new, or buying expensive electronics in the heart of a retrograde. If you cannot avoid it, go slowly and read every line.

Check before you commit. Have a look at this page before you book, sign or launch.

Keep a small note of what comes up. When an old pattern, an old person or an old problem returns during a retrograde, jot it down. When the planet goes direct, read your notes back. You will be surprised how much sense they make.

A last word

Fifty years of watching the sky, and I have never known a retrograde to be the villain of the story. The planets are not against you, dear one. They never were. They only ask, now and then, that you look back before you go on.
